Western Digital external hard drive recovery. Most of them encrypt, which changes the job more than you would think.

A Western Digital external that has stopped working is recovered here for £300 + VAT, quoted in writing before we start. Most My Passport and My Book drives scramble every sector with a key held on their own circuit board, whether or not you ever set a password; the password only locks the key. So the usual trick of taking the drive out and trying it elsewhere gets you noise, not files. We keep the board, the drive and the key together, which is why you should send the whole thing, case and all. Western Digital itself does no data recovery and wipes any drive returned under warranty, but keeps the warranty alive after a laboratory recovery confirmed in writing, which we provide as standard. 3–4 days at the bench.

What tends to go wrong on a Western Digital.

Encryption on the board, every year since 2011The key sits with the USB board and nowhere else. A replacement board without it reads nothing. The bench recovers the key material, not just the board.
The 2015 security paperResearchers published a study of My Passport and My Book encryption in September 2015 showing the key handling on several 2007–2013 models was weaker than advertised. For recovery it means the same thing: the key lives on the board, so keep the board.
Shingled 2.5-inch drivesWD lists its 1TB and 2TB 2.5-inch drives, the WD10SPZX and WD20SPZX inside Elements and My Passport, as shingled. They cope badly with failing heads and interrupted writes, and a repair tool makes things worse.
My Book Live, June 2021The network model, not the USB one, was remotely wiped through a flaw WD had stopped patching. If yours has an Ethernet port, the NAS site is the place; the data often survives a factory reset.
The power-disable pin on bare desktop drivesA drive taken out of a My Book, Elements Desktop or easystore will not spin on some older PC power supplies, because pin 3 of the SATA power connector now means power-disable. A drive that will not spin outside its box is not necessarily dead.

Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo hopeful power-ons
02

The enclosure and its board

Every external drive is two things: the drive, and the USB board that talks to it. The board is checked first, because a failed bridge, a snapped socket or a dead regulator is the whole fault on a good share of jobs, and because on WD's encrypted drives the board holds the key. Where the drive itself has stopped, it comes out of its case onto the bench.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

Stuck or failed heads are replaced with a matched set from a donor, seized spindles freed, and firmware faults corrected in the drive's service area from the terminal. The drive is not repaired to be used again; it is made to read once, in a single careful pass, and that pass is planned before it begins.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

From the bench

  • The model number tells us which kind you have. WDBU is Elements; WDBY, WDBP and WDBS are My Passport; WDBFJK and WDBBGB are My Book. Photograph the label underneath and send it with the form.
  • Keep the case. On My Passport, My Book and easystore the USB board holds the encryption key, generated when the drive was made and kept nowhere else. A drive without its board is a drive without its data.
  • A PCB swap is the wrong repair on these. A donor board without the original's ROM and key reads nothing, or noise. The bench carries the original's chips across or recovers the key material.
  • WD's warranty survives a recovery provided the laboratory confirms the work in writing on letterhead. We include that note as standard; WD wipes any drive it takes back, so recover first.

A 4TB My Passport, dropped from a desk and beeping

The heads had stuck to the platter on impact. The owner unplugged it and left it alone, which is why the platters were unmarked. On the clean bench the heads were freed and replaced with a matched set, the drive came up through its own board so that its encryption key could be used, and it was imaged head by head over four nights. The photographs since 2014 came back complete.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Send the whole unit: case, board, cable and adaptor
  • Tell us whether WD Security or a password was ever set
  • Unplug it the moment it clicks or beeps
  • Note the model from the label underneath

What sets us back

  • Taking the drive out to try it in a caddy
  • Accepting Initialise or Format
  • Running chkdsk or any repair tool
  • Guessing passwords: WD locks after five

Questions answered before you commit.

Will using you void my WD warranty?

No. WD says a recovery service does not void the warranty provided the laboratory confirms the work in writing on letterhead, and we include that note as standard. WD wipes any drive it takes back under warranty, so recover first and claim afterwards.

I never set a password. Is my My Passport still encrypted?

Yes. My Passport, My Book and easystore encrypt on their own board whether or not a password was set; the password only locks the key. Elements does not encrypt.

Does Western Digital recover data itself?

No. Its support pages say so and direct you to partners. The free look here costs nothing.

The USB port snapped off my My Passport. Is that expensive?

It is the same £300 + VAT. It is board work on the drive's own board, not a head swap.

Can you recover a My Book Live after the 2021 wipe?

Often. A factory reset rewrites the file system structures but not usually the data beneath them. It is a network drive, and the NAS site covers it, at the same single-drive price.

Keep the case. Send the whole thing.

On WD's drives the board is the key, and nothing else can stand in for it. The first look is free, and the figure is in writing before any chargeable work.
