EHD / Every kind of external drive / Rugged and shockproof

LaCie Rugged · StoreJet · HD710 · Armor A60

Rugged and shockproof drives. The bumper protects the case. The heads are another matter.

A rugged drive is an ordinary 2.5-inch hard disk in a case with a rubber bumper, sold to survive drops that would kill a plain portable. Within limits, it does: a drive parked and switched off will usually shrug off a fall the bumper was designed for. A drive that is spinning when it falls is a different proposition, because the bumper cannot stop the heads inside from slapping the platters, and a rugged drive that clicks after a drop has exactly the injury a plain one would have. LaCie Rugged, Transcend StoreJet M3 and H3, ADATA HD710 and HD650, Silicon Power Armor and Seagate One Touch are the ones we see. One rugged drive is £300 + VAT after the free look, fixed in writing, 3–4 days at the bench.

Rugged drive symptoms, and what each means.

Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

LaCie Rugged, Rugged Mini, Rugged Triple, Rugged RAIDSeagate drives behind USB-C, USB 3 and Thunderbolt bridges; since 2016 often Rosewood drives in the Mini. The Rugged RAID is two drives that have to be read as a set.
Transcend StoreJet 25M3, 25H3, 25M3SToshiba or WD drives in a three-layer shock case. The bridge board and the internal cabling are the weak points.
ADATA HD710, HD710 Pro, HD650, HD830WD or Toshiba drives by batch, in a waterproof-rated case whose seals are only as good as the last time the flap was closed.
Silicon Power Armor A60, A80, A85 and Seagate One TouchSeagate drives with a fabric or rubber shell. Sound mechanics, ordinary failures.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo hopeful power-ons
02

The enclosure and its board

Every external drive is two things: the drive, and the USB board that talks to it. The board is checked first, because a failed bridge, a snapped socket or a dead regulator is the whole fault on a good share of jobs, and because on WD's encrypted drives the board holds the key. Where the drive itself has stopped, it comes out of its case onto the bench.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

Stuck or failed heads are replaced with a matched set from a donor, seized spindles freed, and firmware faults corrected in the drive's service area from the terminal. The drive is not repaired to be used again; it is made to read once, in a single careful pass, and that pass is planned before it begins.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Switched off, the bumper works. Spinning, it does not. The heads inside a running drive are a fraction of a millimetre from the platters, and no case stops them meeting when the drive hits the floor.
  • The seals last only until the flap is left open once. Waterproof ratings are for a drive that was properly closed. Corrosion keeps going after the drive looks dry.
  • Photographers' drives arrive with the file system damaged more often than the drive, after a disconnect mid-offload. Do not let the Mac repair it; send it.
  • Send the cable. Rugged drives are hard on cables, and a drive that fails on one lead and not another is telling us where the fault is.

One job, followed all the way through.

A LaCie Rugged Mini 2TB that fell from a tripod while a shoot was copying

The bumper was unmarked; the Rosewood drive inside clicked from the first power-on afterwards. On the bench the heads were replaced with a matched set, the terminal unlocked, and the drive imaged head by head with one weak surface last. Every RAW file from the day came back, and the ones from the days before it.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Unplug it at the first click
  • Send it whole with its cable
  • Bag it as it is if it got wet
  • Tell us whether it fell running or switched off

What sets us back

  • Trusting the drop rating on a drive that clicks
  • Drying it with heat
  • Running First Aid or a disk check
  • Opening the bumper case yourself

Questions answered before you commit.

It is a rugged drive. How can it have failed from a drop?

The bumper protects the case and, on a switched-off drive, the mechanics. A drive that is spinning when it falls slaps its heads into the platters, and no case stops that. A rugged drive that clicks after a fall has an ordinary head failure.

Is a rugged drive easier to recover than a plain one?

Neither. The case comes off and the drive inside is an ordinary 2.5-inch drive, usually Seagate, Toshiba or WD, recovered the ordinary way.

My LaCie Rugged RAID shows nothing. Is it two jobs?

One job, two drives. Both are imaged and the set is rebuilt from the images. A two-drive set starts at £500 + VAT.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one drive after the free look, fixed in writing.

How long does it take?

3–4 days at the bench after the free look.

Nothing gets worse while it is unplugged.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive unplugged.
