EHD / Every kind of external drive / Legacy FireWire and eSATA

FireWire 400 and 800 · eSATA · USB 2.0 · IDE inside

Legacy FireWire and eSATA drives. Drives from before USB 3, often with data nobody has looked at in a decade.

The drive from the back of the cupboard: a Maxtor OneTouch, an Iomega, a LaCie d2 with FireWire 800, a WD My Book Studio with eSATA, a Freecom or a no-name USB 2.0 box with an IDE drive inside. They arrive because somebody has died, or moved, or finally wanted the photographs, and the drive has not been powered in years. Old drives fail in old ways: a spindle that will not start after a decade still, a bridge whose interface no modern computer has, a power supply with dried-out capacitors. The platters usually hold everything. One legacy drive is £300 + VAT after the free look, fixed in writing, 3–4 days at the bench.

Old drive symptoms, and what each means.

Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Maxtor OneTouch, Seagate FreeAgentMaxtor and early Seagate drives from 2004 to 2010. The FreeAgent Desktop with a Barracuda 7200.11 inside is the one with the documented 2009 firmware fault that left drives invisible.
Iomega, LenovoEMC, FreecomRebadged Seagate, Samsung and WD drives behind bridges with weak power stages. The bridge is the usual fault.
LaCie d2, Porsche Design, WD My Book StudioFireWire and eSATA desktop drives from creative studios. Oxford Semiconductor bridges that no longer have a host; the drive inside reads fine.
IDE drives in early USB 2.0 boxesDrives from before SATA, on 40-pin connectors. Read on the bench with the right adapters; the boxes themselves are rarely worth powering.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

02

The enclosure and its board

An old drive is not powered to see whether it still works. It goes onto the bench where a stuck spindle can be freed and stuck heads lifted before the motor is asked to turn, because the one attempt that matters is the one that does not scrape.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

Stuck or failed heads are replaced with a matched set from a donor, seized spindles freed, and firmware faults corrected in the drive's service area from the terminal. The drive is not repaired to be used again; it is made to read once, in a single careful pass, and that pass is planned before it begins.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Years off is not years safe. Lubricant migrates, heads settle onto the platters, and the first spin-up after a decade is the one that does the damage. Let the bench do it.
  • The port is never the problem. No FireWire on a new Mac does not mean the data is out of reach; the drive comes out of the box and is read on SATA or IDE directly.
  • The Seagate 7200.11 fault is real and fixable. Drives that vanished in 2009 with the BSY firmware fault are repaired from the terminal, and the data is intact.
  • Old file systems are read fine. HFS+ from an early Mac, FAT32 from a camera, NTFS from a 2005 PC: all rebuilt on the image and copied to fresh media.

One job, followed all the way through.

A Maxtor OneTouch from 2006, found after a house clearance

The drive would not spin: its heads had settled onto the platter over a decade in a loft. On the bench they were lifted and the spindle freed, the drive brought up once, and its 250GB imaged in a single pass. Inside were the photographs from a wedding in 1998, scanned by someone who had since died. They went to the family on a new drive.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Send it as it is, unpowered
  • Send the supply and any lead you have
  • Tell us how long it has been unused
  • Say what you hope is on it

What sets us back

  • Powering it up repeatedly to see whether it works
  • Buying an adapter and trying it at home
  • Opening the drive
  • Using a supply that hums or smells

Questions answered before you commit.

The drive has not been used in ten years. Is the data still there?

Almost always. What fails is the mechanics on the first spin-up, not the data on the platters. Send it unpowered and let the bench bring it up once, safely.

I have no FireWire or eSATA port any more. Does that matter?

No. The drive comes out of its box and is read directly on the bench.

It is an old IDE drive. Can you still read those?

Yes. IDE drives are read on the bench with the right adapters, and old file systems are rebuilt on the image.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one drive after the free look, fixed in writing.

How long does it take?

3–4 days at the bench after the free look.

Nothing gets worse while it is unplugged.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive unplugged.
