Shingled magnetic recording · most 2.5-inch drives since 2016

SMR portable drives. Denser, slower, and less forgiving when something has gone wrong.

Shingled magnetic recording writes tracks overlapping like roof tiles to fit more data onto a platter, and nearly every 2.5-inch portable drive of 1TB and above sold since about 2016 uses it: Seagate's Rosewood family, WD's SMR 2.5-inch drives inside Elements and My Passport, Toshiba's larger Canvio drives. A shingled drive cannot overwrite a track in place, so it keeps a media cache and does its housekeeping in the background, which is fine on a healthy drive and a problem on a failing one: a drive with weak heads spends its time rewriting shingles, a firmware fault leaves the cache and the map out of step, and the wrong recovery tool makes both worse. One SMR drive is £300 + VAT after the free look, fixed in writing, 3–4 days at the bench.

Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

02

The enclosure and its board

Every external drive is two things: the drive, and the USB board that talks to it. The board is checked first, because a failed bridge, a snapped socket or a dead regulator is the whole fault on a good share of jobs, and because on WD's encrypted drives the board holds the key. Where the drive itself has stopped, it comes out of its case onto the bench.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

On a shingled drive the firmware is stabilised before any reading begins: the terminal unlocked where the maker locked it, the service area modules backed up before anything is touched, the translator regenerated only with the originals safe. Then the drive is imaged head by head with reads timed to what the platters and the cache can stand.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Regenerating the translator without backing it up first is the way a recoverable Rosewood becomes an unrecoverable one. Every module is saved before a command is sent.
  • Software recovery on a failing SMR drive is worse than useless. Every retry is more shingle rewriting on weak heads. Stop, and let it be imaged once.
  • The slowness is the drive protecting itself, not a setting you can change. A shingled drive that has become slow is a drive to copy from now, before it becomes a drive that does not read.
  • Deleted-file odds on SMR are honest guesswork until the drive is imaged: the cache and the map decide what survived, and only the bench can see them.

One job, followed all the way through.

A Seagate Expansion Portable 2TB that copied at 200KB a second, then not at all

A small firm's only copy of its accounts, on a Rosewood drive that had slowed over a fortnight. On the bench the terminal was locked and one head was weak; the terminal was unlocked, the service area backed up, and the drive imaged head by head with the weak one last, over three nights. The accounts, and everything else, came back complete.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Stop copying the moment it slows
  • Note the model number on the drive if the case shows it
  • Send it whole, with its lead
  • Say what you need first, so it is imaged first

What sets us back

  • Running chkdsk, First Aid or recovery software
  • Leaving it plugged in overnight to see if it finishes
  • Trying a different computer in case it is faster
  • Opening the case

Questions answered before you commit.

What is an SMR drive?

A drive that writes its tracks overlapping, like roof tiles, to hold more data. Nearly every portable drive of 1TB and above since 2016 is one. It works well until something fails, and then it is slower and less forgiving than an older drive.

Why has my portable drive become so slow?

Either the heads are weak and the drive is retrying, or the shingled housekeeping has fallen behind, or both. It will not improve. Stop copying and have it imaged once, properly.

Is a Seagate Rosewood drive recoverable?

Usually, with care. Stuck heads are freed and replaced, locked terminals unlocked, and the service area backed up before anything is regenerated. The order matters more on these than on any other family.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one drive after the free look, fixed in writing.

How long does it take?

3–4 days at the bench, and shingled drives are usually at the longer end because they are imaged slowly and deliberately.

Nothing gets worse while it is unplugged.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive unplugged.
