G-DRIVE and G-RAID recovery. Three names, one family of drives, mostly enterprise inside.

A failed G-DRIVE is recovered here for £300 + VAT for a single-drive unit; two-bay G-RAID and G-DRIVE Project units are from £500 + VAT, and the four- and eight-bay Shuttles from £1,250 + VAT. These drives were sold as G-Technology until 2021, as SanDisk Professional from May 2021, and as G-DRIVE again from February 2026, after Western Digital separated its flash business. The desktops contain Western Digital's Ultrastar enterprise drives, which fail less often and more politely; the ArmorATD is a 2.5-inch WD drive in a rugged shell. 3–4 days at the bench.

What tends to go wrong on a G-Technology / SanDisk Pro.

Three names since 2021G-Technology became SanDisk Professional in May 2021, keeping the G-DRIVE and G-RAID product names; in February 2026 WD relaunched the range as G-DRIVE. The drives inside did not change; the warranty and support carried over.
Bridge and power supply failures on older unitsA general pattern: the box dies before the drive does, and the drive reads directly.
RAID 0 as the factory setting on older two-bay G-RAIDsOne failed drive takes the volume until it is imaged and the set rebuilt.

Not listed? Describe it on the form →
Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo hopeful power-ons
02

The enclosure and its board

Every external drive is two things: the drive, and the USB board that talks to it. The board is checked first, because a failed bridge, a snapped socket or a dead regulator is the whole fault on a good share of jobs, and because on WD's encrypted drives the board holds the key. Where the drive itself has stopped, it comes out of its case onto the bench.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

Stuck or failed heads are replaced with a matched set from a donor, seized spindles freed, and firmware faults corrected in the drive's service area from the terminal. The drive is not repaired to be used again; it is made to read once, in a single careful pass, and that pass is planned before it begins.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

From the bench

  • Label the bays before a drive comes out. A striped set put back in the wrong order will not assemble.
  • A rebuild is the most dangerous button on the box. On a degraded set it writes across every remaining member. Stop it and image first.
  • Send the box with the drives. The controller's configuration lives on its board, and on some units so does an encryption key.

One job, followed all the way through.

A G-RAID two-bay in RAID 0, one Ultrastar with a failed board, and a documentary's rushes

The failed drive's own board had a blown regulator after a surge on location. It was repaired, both drives imaged, the stripe reassembled from the images, and the ProRes files verified by opening them before anything was invoiced.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Power it down and leave it down
  • Write each bay number on its drive if you remove any
  • Send the box, its power supply and the drives
  • Tell us the RAID mode if you know it

What sets us back

  • Rebuilding, resyncing or re-creating the array
  • Swapping drives between bays
  • Initialising a drive that shows as new
  • Running a repair from the unit's own software

Questions answered before you commit.

Is SanDisk Professional the same as G-Technology?

Yes. The same range was renamed SanDisk Professional in 2021 and G-DRIVE in February 2026; the drives inside are the same.

Does WD's warranty still cover a SanDisk Professional drive?

WD said existing SanDisk Professional hard drive products keep their support and warranty under the new name.

Can you work on a Shuttle 8?

Yes, from £1,250 + VAT, with every member imaged and the set rebuilt from the images.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for a single-drive unit; from £500 + VAT for two bays; from £1,250 + VAT for four or more.

Nothing gets worse while it is unplugged.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive unplugged.
