LaCie external hard drive recovery. An orange bumper does not protect the heads.

A failed LaCie is recovered here for £300 + VAT for a single-drive unit, and from £500 + VAT for a two-bay 2big or Rugged RAID. Seagate has controlled LaCie since 2012, and inside nearly every LaCie is a Seagate drive; in the Rugged Mini and Porsche Design portables it is the same thin 2.5-inch family that tends to beep after a fall. The rubber saves the case. Whatever the heads went through, they went through. On the desktop units the power supply and the bridge board fail before the drive does, and on the RAID units one drive's failure takes the volume with it until that drive is imaged. 3–4 days at the bench.

What tends to go wrong on a LaCie.

Stuck heads after drops on the Rugged MiniThe same Rosewood family as Seagate's own portables, and the same beep. The bumper protects a drive that was switched off; a running drive still slaps its heads on impact.
Power supplies and boards on the desktop unitsA dead d2 or 2big is usually a dead supply or bridge, with the drive untouched behind it. A general pattern rather than a documented event.
RAID 0 by default on some two-bay unitsOne failed drive takes the whole volume until that drive is imaged and the set rebuilt. Do not rebuild or swap in a new drive.
LaCie Private-Public and Rugged SecurePassword-protected encryption that is off until you turn it on. Without the password there is no route in, by us or anyone.
Seagate RescueSeagate's lookup accepts LaCie serial numbers, so a Rescue plan may apply. Check it before the drive goes anywhere.

Not listed? Describe it on the form →
Packing it and posting it: leave the drive in its own case, unopened, and do not take the drive out of a WD My Passport or My Book, because the board it is fixed to holds the encryption key. Wrap the whole unit in bubble wrap inside a box with nothing able to move, send the mains adapter with a desktop drive, insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. A drive that clicks or beeps is not powered again; one that spins is read on our own imaging equipment, never in a computer that will retry and time out and retry. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo hopeful power-ons
02

The enclosure and its board

Every external drive is two things: the drive, and the USB board that talks to it. The board is checked first, because a failed bridge, a snapped socket or a dead regulator is the whole fault on a good share of jobs, and because on WD's encrypted drives the board holds the key. Where the drive itself has stopped, it comes out of its case onto the bench.

03

The mechanics, in clean air

Stuck or failed heads are replaced with a matched set from a donor, seized spindles freed, and firmware faults corrected in the drive's service area from the terminal. The drive is not repaired to be used again; it is made to read once, in a single careful pass, and that pass is planned before it begins.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, head by head and weak areas last, with reads timed to what the platters can stand, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the original board's key or the password you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

From the bench

  • Check Seagate's Rescue lookup first. Many Seagate drives came with a Rescue plan. If it is valid and you can wait up to thirty business days and do without the original drive, it is already paid for. If it has lapsed, or you need the files in days, we are here, at £300 + VAT.
  • Most Seagate portables separate the drive from the USB board, so a dead board is quick work and the drive reads on its own SATA connector.
  • Never run SeaTools Fix All or Long Generic on a drive you need files from. It reallocates sectors and writes over what it could not read.

One job, followed all the way through.

A 2big Thunderbolt 2 in RAID 0, one drive clicking, and a year of an edit suite's projects

One of the two 4TB Seagates had failed at the heads; the other was fine. The failed drive had its heads replaced on the clean bench and was imaged head by head; the healthy one end to end. The stripe was reassembled from the two images with the block size read out of the LaCie's own metadata, and the volume mounted whole.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Check the Rescue lookup with your serial number
  • Unplug a beeping drive and leave it
  • Send the adaptor with a desktop unit
  • Send it whole, in its case

What sets us back

  • Tapping, freezing or shaking a beeping drive
  • Running SeaTools Fix All
  • Buying a firmware fix kit off an auction site
  • Attempting your own recovery if a Rescue claim may follow — the plan may exclude it

Questions answered before you commit.

Is LaCie covered by Seagate Rescue?

Seagate's lookup accepts LaCie serial numbers, so check. If the plan is valid and you can wait up to thirty business days, it is already paid for.

Who makes the drives inside a LaCie?

Seagate, in nearly every model since Seagate took control of LaCie in 2012.

I forgot my Private-Public password. Can you get past it?

No. We do not break encryption. Recover what is outside the encrypted partition; the rest is out of reach.

My Rugged RAID shows nothing. Is it two jobs?

One job, two drives. Both are imaged and the set is rebuilt from the images. A two-drive set starts at £500 + VAT.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for a single-drive LaCie after the free look; from £500 + VAT for two-bay units; from £1,250 + VAT for 5big and larger.

Label the bays. Send the whole unit.

Every member imaged before anything is put back together. The first look is free, and the figure is in writing before any chargeable work.
